The Boekenhoutskloof 2023 Franschhoek Semillon is delightful and unexpectedly fresh, offering a light mineral edge that immediately sets it apart. Stone fruit flavors are delivered with purity and restraint, supported by gentle brushstrokes of honey and a lovely, supple mouthfeel that brings quiet depth without weight. The wine draws from a remarkable collection of old vineyards (including the famed La Colline), including one of the Western Cape’s oldest Semillon plots planted in 1902, complemented by a sandy-soil vineyard planted in 1942 and a granite-based site established in 1956, together lending nuance and layered complexity.
Lemons, beeswax, cashews, pralines, peaches and salted butter on the nose of this wonderfully textured and creamy white. It’s full-bodied and elegant, minerally and nutty, with delicious salty undertones. Excellent length, showing a zesty freshness at the end. From old vines planted in 1902, 1936 and 1942. Drink or hold.
The 2023 Sémillon comes from three vineyards, with the oldest vines planted in 1902 and 61% planted in 1936. Matured in 70% new French oak for 14 months, it has a glorious bouquet with yellow plum, jasmine and wax resin scents, beautifully defined. The palate has a fine line of acidity, bright and fresh, lovely texture with a pithy finish.
