The 2021 growing season in Bordeaux was cool and wet, with frosts in April reducing yields and a long, cool summer. For the white wines of Pessac-Léognan, it was a quiet blessing. Acidity was high, sugar levels were moderate, and Sauvignon Blanc retained its nervousness. Château Carbonnieux Blanc 2021 reflects this profile: a classic vintage, dense rather than ripe and fleshy.
Notions of citrus zest, fresh mint, peach, pastry cream and Sauvignon botanicals introduce the 2021 Carbonnieux Blanc, a medium-bodied, satiny wine that's ample and precise. It's an attractive example of the modern school of white Bordeaux, even if anyone who has tasted older vintages from the 1960s or 1970s—when the wines were less Sauvignon-driven and aromatic but more textural and sapid—will inevitably be disappointed.
Fresh and breezy, with a fleur de sel edge that adds nice energy to the core of gooseberry, white peach and lemon gelée. Presents a pretty quinine echo through the finish. Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon.
Medium-bodied with a crisp and fresh array of citrus and apple fruit. Hints of stones and hazelnuts. Fresh and lightly creamy finish.
The first impression is citrus, lemon zest and grapefruit rind, followed by a clear thread of white flowers. Sémillon softens the edges with hints of wax and lanolin (slightly oily, like a lip balm). Barrel fermentation adds subtle toasty notes without dominating. The palate is supple and mineral, with long, cool acidity that lingers through the finish. More of an accompaniment to food than a stand-alone wine.
The 2021 blend is dominated by Sauvignon Blanc, about 70%, with Semillon making up the remaining 30%. Why this division? Sauvignon Blanc gives a citrus drive and aromatic lift. Semillon adds body, a waxy feel and structure that allows the white wine to age. Without Sémillon, the wine would be more pungent and simple.
Drink from about 2025 to 2038; the high acidity from the cool 2021 vintage is the engine of this wine, and the Sémillon gives it persistence. Store at 12-14°C. Citrus and floral aromas at a young age; expect honey, toasted nuts and a richer texture after 5-8 years of aging.
Carbonnieux has been growing grapes here since 1234, making it one of the oldest estates in Bordeaux. However, the modern story begins in 1956, when Marc Perrin bought the estate, which was in poor condition, and began replanting it. Today, Eric, Christine and Philibert Perrin run the estate as the fifth generation. Carbonnieux is the largest white wine producer in Pessac-Léognan, which takes white wine as seriously as red wine. This is rarer than one might imagine.
Carbonnieux sits on a gravel plateau in Léognan, underlain by clay and clay-limestone. Why is this important for white wines? Gravel drains the soil well, stores heat during the day and releases it slowly at night. This is the ripening period that Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon need to develop their flavors without losing acidity. The clay soil stores moisture and shows its potential in dry years.
Carbonnieux white wines are pressed and fermented in stainless steel. Why in stainless steel and not in barrels from the start? Because the goal is to preserve freshness and let the fruit speak for itself before using wooden barrels. After fermentation, the wine is transferred into French oak barrels where it ages for about 10 months. The percentage of new oak is about 25%. Since 2011, the team has become more precise, vinifying plot by plot.
Semillon's combination of citrusy acidity and waxy heaviness makes this wine serious for food. Taste:
Serve at 10-12°C. Young 2022 does not require decanting.
