A 1.5-ha plot planted on steeply terraced schist and mica soils. Certified organic and biodynamic. Cask sample.
Black core shading to a narrow purple rim. Pure, dark and peppery with a fragrant note of peony. A touch smoky/stony but this is almost hidden thanks to all that black fruit. None of the Cornas meatiness in the aroma although there is a hint of that on the palate. Firmly textured, refined tannins. Layered, powerful and perfumed at the same time. Long, dry, almost chalky finish. Deeply tannic but elegant even now because the texture is so fine and dry – all that chalkiness. A youthful beauty. (JH)
The 2023 Côte-Rôtie Neve needs a little time to unfurl in the glass, gradually revealing ripe black fruits, dried violets, finely nuanced stemmy tones and pencil shavings. A touch of orange rind also leaves its mark. Midweight and gently framed by ripe tannins, with a thread of vibrant freshness, the 2023 is an outstanding Neve that Chapoutier followers will not want to miss.
Coming from a very steep, schist slope in the northern part of the appellation and fermented with 30% stems, the 2023 Côte Rôtie Nève offers vibrant cassis, graphite, crushed stone, and spicy incense nuances intermixed with impressive minerality. It's medium to full-bodied and concentrated on the palate, with flawless balance, tons of structure, ample mid-palate depth, no hard edges, and a gorgeous finish. It might take a decade to hit full maturity, yet I suspect it will shine with 4-5 years of bottle age and will be a 30-year wine. Drink 2030-2060.
