The 2023 Ermitage Le Méal Blanc has turned out brilliantly, exemplifying the telluric force of its distinguished terroir. Wafting from the glass with aromas of exotic fruits, smoke, ripe orchard fruits and baked white fruits mingled with both a flinty touch and lovely reduction, it's full-bodied, satiny and layered, with racy acids and an impressively muscular, concentrated palate framed by gastronomic bitterness. The saline finish has controlled power that adds energy and a penetrating aftertaste. Originating from vines on the western part of the Hermitage hill, facing south and harvested in several batches, this wine demands time to integrate its élevage fully. It is poised to age gracefully over the next two decades.
A 2-ha parcel of old Marsanne vines – more than 50 years old – planted on alluvial soils with large pebbles. Certified organic and biodynamic. Cask sample.
Smells wonderfully golden and spicy, ripe yellow plums, nutty and savoury but with a floral note as it opens. More savoury/spicy and less perfumed than the Hermitage de L'Orée. More tension and perceived acidity, again that salty aftertaste that brings the freshness. Creamy, mealy but not overly oaky. A touch more concentration than in the de L'Orée. (JH)
The 2023 Ermitage Blanc Le Méal captivates with enchanting linden blossom, yellow apple and jasmine, underscored by flinty layers and delicate tangerine flesh. The 2023 is medium- to full-bodied on the palate with remarkable clarity and freshness, seamlessly blending power and finesse. The finish is multifaceted and defined, resonating with pristine notes of honeysuckle and pear, leaving a lasting impression. Give it at least two more years in bottle.
Orange blossom, stone fruits, crushed stone, and white currant notes all emerge from the 2023 Ermitage Le Méal Blanc. Medium to full-bodied, fresh, and focused, with good density and concentration, this shows the style of the estate these days. Made from 100% Marsanne and aged in 85% demi-muids and foudre (10% new) with 15% in stainless steel for 12 months, drink 2025-2040.
