Sustainability and environmental responsibility

At Best of Wines, sustainable choices inform our daily decisions and processes. From the materials we use to who we partner with, our goal is to minimize our environmental impact wherever possible, and to ensure a workable, livable and, in the end, sustainable future.

Our solar-powered warehouse

Our solar-powered warehouse

The flat, open roof of our warehouse is covered with solar panels which can power our climate control system and appliances almost all year round. The wine storage area is well-insulated to minimize energy consumption going to maintaining a safe temperature for our wines.

We make use of as little machinery as possible to further reduce our energy consumption. Our electrical appliances are selected for their energy ratings, and our inhouse lighting is either LED, fluorescent tube, or CFL

Office supplies, cleaning supplies, appliances, fire extinguishers, consumables, and packing materials are all sourced with our environmental and social responsibilty in mind. Whenever available, eco-certified alternatives are chosen for our day-to-day operation.

We encourage and support our employees to cycle and make use of public transportation.

Wine producers

For decades now and especially the last decade, wine producers are shifting rapidly to organic and biodynamic farming and winemaking. In some cases wine producers are shifting towards making natural wine.

We work with winemakers who treat the planet and vines with respect and do everything in their power to make wines in a way that is sustainable. But this is always a balance: organic and biodynamic farming is a complex and expensive process (check our blog of organic and biodynamic wine). It is all about the intention. Be as sustainable as you can be within the limitations of responsible winemaking as a business.

Almost without exception, Best of Wines works with wineproducers who let mother nature do the work: it is all about terroir, with as little intervention as possble. These growers focus on their vineyards, to produce the healthiest fruit, often farmed organically or biodynamically. Just visit these wineproducers and you can easily be a witness of how to produce wine in a sustainable way.

Packaging and delivery

We pay special attention to our choice of packaging material. Apart from sturdy, reliable and esthetically pleasing, it has to adhere to a high standard regarding sustainabilty.

The outer box is composed of recycled material and is FSC®, PEFC™, SFI™ and Chain of Custody certified. It is 100% recyclable and biodegradable. No harmful substances are used in the printing ink and outer layer. We prefer the use of cardboard boxes as they require fewer chemicals to produce.

The inner packing materials we use are made from 100% recycled material and are fully recyclable and biodegradable. The padding material is certified by the independent ecolabel Blue Angel (Blauer-Engel) which has been the ecolabel of choice for the German federal government for over 45 years, with an incredibly high standard of requirements to comply with to be certified.

With these choices of packaging materials we aim to reduce the impact on the waste we produce and which our customers receive when having their wines or whiskies delivered, by allowing the materials to be fully recyclable.

Our transport partners do their part to ensure environmentally friendly supply chain management, logistic solutions, and deliveries.

We continually add new measures to aid us in being a sustainable company.
